Sofia Budakova

About the artist

Sofia Budakova is a realist artist working in the genre of documentary historical still life.

She received her formal art education at the Yoshkar-Ola Art College, preceded by studies at Children’s Art School No. 1 in Yoshkar-Ola. During her years of study, she was awarded professional prizes and participated in regional and interregional exhibitions.

After graduating from college, the artist went through an extended period of professional and personal exploration, working across various fields of art and visual practice. This experience included book illustration, decorative interior painting, small-scale sculpture, work in an artistic metal forging workshop, and teaching artistic techniques. In parallel, Sofia worked in interior design, which shaped her precise spatial thinking and heightened her attention to light, composition, and the materiality of form.

A significant role in the formation of her artistic practice was played by the study of classical heritage. Over several years, Sofia worked with copies of works by 17th-century Dutch masters, analyzing the structure of light, surface textures, and the principles of constructing object-based space. This experience became the foundation for the development of her own artistic method.

Artistic Path and the Time Capsule Project

A turning point in her artistic practice was the creation of the Time Capsule project in 2024. The project brought together her accumulated visual experience, interest in historical material, and a research-based approach. Time Capsule became the central and long-term direction of Sofia Budakova’s artistic work.

In 2025, the Time Capsule series was presented at the international exhibition-competition Russian Art Week, where it received the Grand Prix and professional recognition from the expert community. Following her participation in exhibition projects, Sofia Budakova was admitted as a member of the Eurasian Art Union.

At present, the artist is focused on the further development of the Time Capsule project, working with archival and documentary sources, and preparing for participation in exhibition and residency programs. Her practice is aimed at advancing documentary painting as a contemporary artistic language capable of addressing history through the material evidence of the past.
